Dot Vegas, Inc. is the registry (owner) of .Vegas, a new generic top level domain (gTLD or TLD). A TLD is the part of a Website address that comes after the dot on the right (i.e. .com, .net, .org for example).
All top level domain names are governed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The principals of Dot Vegas, Inc. have been actively involved with the domain name industry since 1998, starting with eNic corporation. eNic corporation was the registry for the country code top level domain .CC, which is now owned by VeriSign.
Dot Vegas, Inc. has support from not only the local government including a revenue partnership with the city of Las Vegas, but also many large local community organizations. The city of Las Vegas receives in perpetuity a percentage of fees generated by the registration and renewal of .Vegas digital addresses.
Is “generic” a bad word?
Not at all. Because .Vegas is a generic top level domain, those applying for a .Vegas extension do not have to be physically located in or have a defined nexus with the city of Las Vegas. Anyone in the world can register a .Vegas domain.
As the official Las Vegas registry, Dot Vegas Inc. is the company that controls and operates the .Vegas TLD. Registrars or companies like GoDaddy, Network Solutions, eNom, or 1&1 take registrations for second level domain names, or the part of the Internet address located to the left of the dot.
We encourage all local companies and individuals to participate in becoming part of the .Vegas community! For individuals and companies that have a physical location in Las Vegas, it is imperative for them to also have a digital location on the Internet that represents their brand in Las Vegas. For multi-geographical organizations with a local office in Las Vegas, it makes sense to establish a local authority with a custom .Vegas Website address, as well.
